Royal Holloway University of London has awarded three new Honorary Fellowships.
Dr Claire Gobbi Daunton, Dr Doron Swade MBE and Dr Klaus Vedder were conferred at this year’s ceremony held at the university.
Honorary Fellowships recognise the outstanding contributions made by individuals to the life and work of the College or to education generally.
Claire Gobbi Daunton is an historian and archivist who has long and distinguished links with the university. Dr Daunton gained a BA in History (First Class) from Bedford College, University of London, and subsequently worked on the cataloguing of the archives of Bedford College on its move to the Egham site with the formation of the present institution, Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. She has been actively and enthusiastically involved in furthering the work of the Bedford Society since its inception and currently chairs the society.
Doron Swade is an engineer, historian and museum professional. He has held posts at a number of universities, as well as working in the technology sector, in particularl the microcomputer industry. Dr Swade was Curator of Computing at the Science Museum, London and later Assistant Director and Head of Collections. He founded, Computer Conservation Society in 1989, which is dedicated to the preservation and restoration to working order of historic computing machines. He was awarded an MBE for Services to the History of Computing in 2009.
Klaus Vedder was born in Germany and educated at the universities of Tübingen, Birmingham and London. He worked for Siemens and Giesecke & Devrient. As Head of the Telecommunications Division, he established G&D as a leading supplier in the SIM business.
His involvement in an EU project on security topics for mobile communications brought him into contact with Royal Holloway, which was participating the same project. Giesecke & Devrientwas a key player in the foundation of the Smart Card Centre at Royal Holloway, along with Vodafone. The centre plays an important role in the standardisation of the SIM, something Dr Vedder has championed since 1988. He had his 25th anniversary as the Chairman of the ETSI committees driving the standardisation of the SIM in April 2018 and was made an ETSI Fellow just prior to this.
