Having scored positively in three requirements set out by USwitch to be considered a leader in sustainability, Royal Holloway has been ranked top tier in the Renewable University Report 2021.

Royal Holloway’s eco-friendly credentials are:

  • On-site solar PV panels
  • Recycling scheme – zero to landfill
  • 100% renewable energy tariff with EDF Energy

Dr David Ashton, Deputy Principal (Operations) of Royal Holloway, said: “At Royal Holloway we are committed to addressing climate change and as the university’s executive lead for environmental sustainability, I am delighted that we have ranked as a top tier university in Uswitch’s Renewable University Report.

“The report shows that although there is a lot more to be done, UK universities are working towards committing to being sustainable. Royal Holloway is working hard towards goals such as zero to land fill by 2022 and achieving net zero by 2035.”

Sarah Broomfield, energy expert at Uswitch.com, said: “It’s great to see that some universities are going above and beyond when it comes to sustainability.

“Having renewable installations on campus and schemes in place to produce more of their own renewable energy shows that they are leading by example in trying to achieve net-zero carbon emissions.

“While not every university will have the same financial resources to generate their own power, it’s good to see that they are willing to “go green” by choosing a renewable energy tariff from their supplier.”

The USwitch study involved a Freedom of Information request on 132 universities asking them about their procurement of energy and green policies, and Uswitch received 118 responses in total.
