Welcome to the Department of English
We’re an innovative, energetic, creative and friendly department, with a commitment to excellence and inclusion across our award-winning teaching, writing and research. Our scholars have international reputations as expert writers, critical thinkers and influencers in their fields, and we have an unprecedented seven Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature on our permanent staff.
Our postgraduate courses offer expertise across the full chronological and specialist range of English literary study, with major research strengths in the Renaissance, 19th century and 20th century, and particular specialisms in Shakespeare, Swift, Sterne, Dickens, Browning, Hardy, contemporary literature and critical theory.
Our MA Creative Writing course is taught at the Royal Holloway London Graduate School, with all other courses taking place at our main campus in Egham. Our two campuses are located only 40 minutes away from each other by train, meaning that all students can have the opportunity to access fantastic study and research facilities such as the College Library, Senate House Library, the British Library, on top of a range of IT support.
Our diverse range of expertise across our department enables our students to delve into their interests while becoming better equipped with reputable skills necessary for a successful graduate life, or further study.
