Internationally recognised for the quality of its teaching and research, the Department of Biological Sciences is a dynamic and friendly place to study.
We offer an exciting range of undergraduate degree programmes spanning biology, medical biochemistry, and biomedical sciences, to zoology, ecology and conservation.
All of our courses are taught by specialist staff with high professional standards and international reputations. We take great pride in our approachability, friendliness and the support that we offer our students, and our commitment to ensuring inclusivity in all activities has earned the department a Bronze Athena SWAN award recognising best practice in equal opportunities.
Our teaching quality has been consistently recognised as outstanding, with contact hours being higher than many of our competitors, and our students spending over 25 per cent of their time in scheduled teaching sessions. We offer year in industry options on all of our degrees, enabling our students to gain professional experience and invaluable transferable skills in a real-world environment.
As a major centre for research in the University of London, we are a vibrant scientific community with staff and postgraduate researchers drawn from across the world. Our active research programme is based on three research centres: Biomedical Sciences, Evolution and Behaviour; and Plant Molecular Sciences, where academic staff are working at the frontiers of knowledge in their subjects with a thriving postgraduate community and international collaborations.
