Digital Organisation and Society Research Centre

The Digital Organisation and Society (DOS) Research Centre is an interdisciplinary group of researchers whose work focuses on developing a critical and insightful understanding of the implications of digital technologies for work, organisations and society and interactions between them. 

Our principles are:

  • Inclusivity; bringing together researchers at different stages in their careers and from different departments and disciplines, diverse ethnicity, gender, race and age 
  • Impact; focusing on impactful work in terms of organisations, industries and societies to solve real-world problems


Our aims:

  • To facilitate academic research on the role and impact of digital technologies on innovation and entrepreneurship, human resources, marketing, accounting and other business operations 
  • To encourage a critical perspective on digital technologies and their impact on organisations and wider society 
  • To enable knowledge exchange and foster collaborations within SBM and beyond, including our national and international partners 
  • To develop and support a community of researchers within SBM and play a key role within the RHUL ‘Digital’ Catalyst 
  • To promote academic/industry engagement to solve real-world problems

Dr Nisreen Ameen (Director)

Dr. Nisreen Ameen is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Digital Marketing at Royal Holloway, University of London and Director of the Digital Organisation and Society research centre. Nisreen is also currently serving as Vice President of the UK Academy of Information Systems (UKAIS). She is an Associate Editor for Information Technology and People and Computers in Human Behavior. Nisreen has also served as a Guest Editor for special issues in various top ranked journals such as: Information Systems Frontiers, Computers in Human Behavior, Psychology and Marketing, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Business Research, The Service Industries Journal and International Journal of Consumer Studies. 
Nisreen’s research focuses on two main themes: first, consumer interactions with new-age technologies; and second, how organisations can use these technologies to provide better experiences, services and products. Within these main themes, her research interests include digital marketing and entrepreneurship, human-computer interaction consumer behaviour, and organisational use of consumer data. She also focuses on cross-national and cross-cultural research in developing, emerging and developed markets. She has expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis; in particular, survey and experimental research. Her research has been published in high-ranking journals: Journal of Travel Research; British Journal of Management; International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior and Research; Psychology and Marketing; Information Technology and People; Information Systems Frontiers; Internet Research; Computers in Human Behavior; Information Systems Management; Information Technology for Development; the British Journal of Educational Technology; and the International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship.
Nisreen’s work has been featured in world-leading media outlets such as CNN, World Bank, The Conversation, New Stateman and Fast Company.

Researchers in the DOS area have a wide range of interests in relation to Digital Organisation and Society, however, these are organised into four broad clusters:

Digital technology, organization and work

  • Digital communications and connectivity at work; 
  • New meanings, forms and places of work and collaboration; 
  • Virtual communities and virtual organisation; 
  • Artificial intelligence and algorithmic work; 
  • Digital labour in a platform economy.
Digital economy and innovation

Cluster leads:  Dr Najmeh Hafezieh and Dr Anabel Gutierrez Mendoza

  • Digital public services (e.G. E-government, e-health, e-learning); 
  • Business and social values of digital platforms; 
  • Open innovation and development (e.G. Open data, open science, open education etc.); 
  • Big data and business intelligence; 
  • Digital innovation for a sustainable economy.
Digital inequality, ethics and cyberactivism

Cluster leads: Dr Vera Hoelscher and Dr Rebecca Bolt

  • Technocapitalism and neoliberalism in a digital age; 
  • Gender and digital technologies; 
  • Online social movements; 
  • Digital ethics (e.G. Privacy, surveillance, net neutrality); 
  • Social inclusion/exclusion and inequality in digital societies; 
  • ICT for development. 
Cybersecurity, Design and Human Behaviour

Cluster leads: Dr Elizabeth Quaglia and Dr Nisreen Ameen

  • Security and privacy in the digital society; 
  • Design narratives and narratives of security; 
  • User experience and advanced digital technologies;

Business Analytics and Big Data

  • User experience and advanced digital technologies; 
  • Accountability and ethics in the digital experience. 
AI in Security

Cluster leads: Dr The Khoa Do, Bin and Dr Yuanyuan Lai

  • Service robots and intelligent virtual agents; 
  • AI algorithms in online services Human enhancement technology-HET (e.g., cyborgs); 
  • AI in healthcare; 
  • New generations of AI. 

In addition, the Centre provides a forum to enhance exploration and integration of existing and emerging digital research methods, including: Big Data analysis, on-line (and off-line) data tracking; data analytics and data visualisation; virtual ethnography; on-line participatory research, including crowdsourcing approaches and ethical issues in digital research.
