The award was given to a paper co-authored by Julia Meister.
The paper 'Deep Learning Application in Security and Privacy – Theory and Practice: A Position Paper', co-authored by Raja Naeem Akram and Konstantinos Markantonakis from the Information Security Group (ISG), provides an overview of current Deep Learning security/privacy applications, a summary of aspects to consider for implementation and deployment, and a review of Deep Learning's promise and issues that have to be addressed before widespread use in the security domain.
Julia presented the paper at the 12th WISTP International Conference on Information Security Theory and Practice conference in Brussels where it won the 'Best Student Paper' award.
Julia started her BSc in Computer Science (Information Security) in 2016. During the summer of 2018, she won a UROP bursary to work on a research project supervised by Professor Markantonakis, which provided the basis for the WISTP'18 paper.
"I really enjoyed the project and writing the paper as it gave me a chance to work on something with more flexibility than the usual assignments. While Raja and Konstantinos provided continuing support and guidance, I had to learn to approach the problems with a research mindset and find solutions independently. Overall, it was a great experience that taught me a lot both in regards to researching a topic and taking responsibility for my work.", said Julia.
