Economics graduates are in high demand and end up working in a wide variety of jobs and sectors.
The career opportunities are also reflected in earnings: the Institute for Fiscal Studies found that Economics is the second most lucrative degree.

With many doors open to Economic graduates, we seek to discuss options and employability with our students regularly, so that they have direction, conviction and requisite knowledge when choosing a path.
Careers Programmes
Employability Preparation
Recruitment processes for companies, civil service or NGOs have become a complex and lengthy process. Understanding and preparing to face this process provide students with a competitive edge. Also, employers across the board now seek candidates with more than just a graduate diploma. To prepare our students for the realities of work after graduation, we provide specific employability training during the three years of the program. This program includes writing a CV, a cover letter, preparing for the various tests employers use on job applicants and practicing interviews... A specific focus is put on the transferable skills you can acquire during your time at university. We will guide your development of these skills through extra curriculum activities and, at least as important, we will help you learn to communicate effectively to potential employer about the skills you will develop both inside and outside of class.
Economics@Work
Due to the strong links we have maintained with our alumni, we have had many return to Royal Holloway to provide advice, contacts and networking opportunities to current students.
Talks and presentations are also a big part of Economics@Work, and we have been fortunate enough to receive many fantastic job lectures and presentations from previous students.
Global Leadership Programme
The Global Leadership Programme (GLP) is an extra-curricular programme to develop students’ skills for working successfully with cultural difference. It offers four students a year learning opportunities which are immersive and transformative.
The GLP explores key themes such as issues surrounding citizenship and leadership in a global context, as well as inter-cultural competence. The programme includes:
- Workshops
- An exhibition event
- A free residential trip to another country worth £1,500
Not only are the experiences offered by the GLP enriching and expansive, but they can also make a significant contribution to a student's CV.
Careers Centre
Searching for (or even thinking about!) your future career can be a daunting task, and so the best place to start can often be to get some well-informed advice. The friendly team at the university Careers Centre are located in the library, and they can help you with:
- CVs, applications, and interviews
- Finding internships and work experience
- Making the most of recruitment fairs
- Using social media for job hunting
