Ed Armston-Sheret, a first-year PhD student in the Department of Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been awarded an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) fellowship to carry out research at the Huntington Library in California.

The fellowship is part of the AHRC’s International Placement Scheme, which funds doctoral students and early career researchers to access collections at a number of international institutions.
Ed has been awarded a three-month fellowship in order to visit the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. The Huntington Library is a collections-based research and educational institution home to a world-class collection of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, paintings, prints, sculpture, and decorative arts. While at the institution, Ed will be researching the books and manuscripts of the nineteenth-century explorer, Sir Richard Burton held at the library. This research will support his wider doctoral research on how explorers prepared, used, and represented their bodies in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Speaking on the subject, Ed said:
“I’m delighted to have been awarded this fellowship and am excited to visit the Huntington Library. Spending time there will help my research immensely, as I’ll be able to carry out research that I couldn’t have done anywhere else.”
Ed is supervised by Dr Innes M. Keighren and Professor Klaus Dodds.
