London NERC DTP Competition Funded Studentship

Applications are invited for a 4 year fully-funded PhD studentship, to start in September 2023.  Are you interested in helping to solve some of the most pressing issues concerning the natural environment? Are you keen to develop advanced research skills that can equip you for a wide range of future careers? For these reasons and more, you may be an ideal candidate to apply for a studentship with the London NERC DTP.

The London NERC Doctoral Training Partnership brings together eight of the world’s leading research centres in environmental science. Our partnership provides you with the opportunity for innovative doctoral training in a multidisciplinary research environment and fosters links between centres of research excellence, spanning the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) environmental science remit.

This studentship has been directly allocated to Royal Holloway, with a choice of projects that falls under the DTP research themes of Biodiversity, Ecology & Conservation, Earth, Atmosphere & Ocean Processes and Past Life & Environments.  The successful candidate will be allocated to a project and supervisors from the start of their studies but will participate in the cross-partner training offered by the London NERC DTP partners in the first six months of their programme (see https://london-nerc-dtp.org/programme/ for details).

Projects from the Geography department are advertised on these pages:

Project 1: Lead supervisor Professor Simon Blockley

Project 2: Lead supervisor Professor Ian Candy

Project 3: Lead supervisor Dr Celia Martin Puertas

Project 4: Lead supervisor Professor Danielle Schreve

Applicants are strongly advised to make contact with the lead supervisor before applying.

Applicants are requested to complete the application form here and to send this form and a two page CV direct to the lead supervisor by 17.00 on Monday 19th June 2023. In addition, two references must also have been received by this deadline; these are submitted via an online form direct to the DTP (see application form).

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview on either 6th or 7th July (to be confirmed).

The London NERC DTP appreciates and values difference, and we are seeking to attract, develop and retain a diverse mix of talented people from a wide range of academic backgrounds. We are committed to making Equality, Diversity and Inclusion an integral component of DTP life. We particularly welcome applications from those from minority ethnic groups, disadvantaged backgrounds or who have taken a career break.

Eligibility: NERC funding is subject to candidates meeting UKRI-NERC eligibility criteria and we also encourage eligible international applicants. There are options for part-time and flexible study.

Please direct any queries on eligibility to Kate Moore at londonnercdtp.admin@ucl.ac.uk. If you have any questions about the project proposals, please contact the lead supervisor.
