The Department of History occasionally hosts external researchers according to a number of different schemes outlined below.
Applications for a visiting appointment are considered by the Departmental Research Committee in the second week of each academic term. Applications should be submitted by the first Monday of the term preceding the term in which the proposed stay would take place. Please direct questions to research-history@rhul.ac.uk in the first instance.
1. EXTERNALLY FUNDED FELLOWS
We are happy to sponsor applications to externally funded post-doctoral fellowships such as the British Academy Early Career Fellowship, the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, and the Newton Fellowship. In most cases such sponsorship is arranged via a preliminary internal competition with its own deadline some weeks ahead of the deadline imposed by the external funding body. In addition, from time to time the Department is able to host scholars and post-graduate students from beyond the University who wish to visit the University of London for a period of weeks or months, or to join the Department's research community as an honorary member. Such invitations are normally offered through a competitive selection process. In order to be successful a case must be made that the project in question supports one of the existing or proposed research projects (or other agreed priorities) of the Department.
2. HONORARY RESEARCH ASSOCIATES are academics who are appointed to a three-year non-stipendiary role supporting one of the Department's research projects or clusters. Application for this role is by letter indicating which areas of the department’s research activity the proposal aims to support, addressed to the Secretary to the Research Committee at the above email address, and accompanied by a c.v. and list of publications.
3. ACADEMIC VISITORS are members of staff at other universities who visit for a short period, sometimes from abroad and often as part of an academic sabbatical. These appointments normally require payment of a bench fee to cover the cost of library and other resources; in exceptional circumstances the fee can be borne by the host department. Application for this role is by letter indicating which areas of the department’s research activity the proposal aims to support, addressed to the Secretary to the Research Committee at the above email address, and accompanied by a c.v. and list of publications.
4. GUEST RESEARCHERS (VISITING RESEARCH STUDENTS) are doctoral students enrolled in other universities who visit for one or more terms (up to one year) in order to work with a specific academic. Application for this role involves first contacting a potential sponsor in the Department; the sponsor will then forward an application to the Departmental Research Committee. Once approval has been received, the Admissions Office will contact the student with information about how to confirm the application. NB. These visits require payment of a tuition fee.
