Why Royal Holloway?

Having started my BA here in 2013 and then moving on to an MA (where I met my supervisor) I could not have imagined another university to do my PhD at and I am glad I did! I feel very much at home in the community on campus and especially in the department with all its brilliant academics and staff delivering excellent output in teaching, on tv or in book-form. Royal Holloway is very different to other universities in that you are being treated as an individual and valued and supported as a researcher in a great community!

My research

My research is centred on the material culture of mourning and the gendered expression of grief in Victorian England. I am looking at objects, including mourning and dress, jewellery and art and combine them with documents, such as letters and magazines to match them up and create an accurate picture of how grief was really expressed and how this was experienced by individuals at the time.
