Information Security Group hosts 2022 Open Day

  • Date18 July 2022

On 5th July 2022 we hosted another edition of the ISG Open Day, the first since before the pandemic. This year, we were also celebrating 30 years of the MSc Information Security. We invited alumni, industrial and academic colleagues, friends, and anyone with an interest in Information Security to learn more about what we do.

The event began with a welcome keynote from Prof Keith Martin, who walked us through a series of acronyms that summarise the recent developments of the ISG (itself one of the acronyms!). These included plans for updating our MSc Information Security, our CDT in cyber security, and our ACE-CSR and ACE-CSE status. Describing the latter enabled us to screen the world premiere of two films aimed at undergraduate students, to increase their cyber security awareness. The films have been put together by a team of CDT students, aided by an Emmy-nominated director!

After a networking coffee break, we ran several parallel sessions to showcase some of the academic research topics of focus for the ISG: cryptography, cyber-physical system and IoT security, software and system security, and people and security. PhD students and postdocs also had the opportunity to present posters and demos of their recent research.

After lunch, there were two panel sessions. The first discussed “Are deepfakes a threat?” and was chaired by Jassim Happa and the panel consisting of Melanie Curran and Konstantinos Mersinas. The second panel, consisting of Andy Clark, Paul Dorey and Paul Lewis, discussed “Are we on the brink of a cyber apocalypse?”; a lively discussion ensued!

The day concluded with an alumni dinner hosted in the Picture Gallery. It was great to continue the discussions from earlier in the day, and to reconnect with old friends! We hope to see you again at an ISG event soon.
