In December 2019, Dr James Kent and Prof Hannah Thompson will lead a networking meeting and workshop in Havana, Cuba. The event will focus on the relationship between photography and audio-description and is funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund.
Dr James Kent with the photographer Raúl Cañibano at the Photographers' Gallery, London
The workshop will bring together British and Cuban experts, researchers and practitioners whose work involves curatorial and photographic practice and will involve reviewing the way we engage with and exhibit images in the gallery space. Kent and Thompson will be working collaboratively with representatives from the Universidad de La Habana (UH), the Universidad de las Artes (ISA), the Fototeca de Cuba, and a number of Cuba’s leading photographers to design a plan for the delivery of school workshops relating to photography and visual storytelling that would impact positively on the personal and social wellbeing of Cuban school children, socio-economically marginalised groups and disabled people.
Following the success of this year’s
This is Cuba: Documentary photography after Fidel exhibition at Royal Holloway, Dr James Kent acted as Exhibition Liaison for Cuban photographer Raúl Cañibano’s first UK solo exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery, London:
Raúl Cañibano: Chronicles of an Island (Nov-Dec 2019). Dr Kent will give a talk on this collaboration at the
University of Cambridge in February 2020.
