At the conference, held on 23rd May, postgraduate students from a range of disciplinary perspectives within the Department of Law and Criminology presented aspects of their research, addressing a broad range of topics.
The Department of Law and Criminology Postgraduate Research (PGR) Conference was held on 23rd May 2024 in our Egham campus with lunch and drinks giving us a chance to network as a community. Organised and run by our department PGR Academic lead, Professor Jill Marshall, and one of our PGR Academic representatives, Kat Osborne, the conference brought together PhD students and academics from the department. We heard presentations and had the opportunity to comment on, and ask questions of, the following current PhD students:
- Melike Batmazoglu ‘The EU versus the ICSID convention: is it possible to fight fire with fire?’
- Elise Craig ‘Community engagement in crime prevention: initial findings from the literature’
- Jeanette Hall ‘The use of PAVA irritant spray in prisons in England and Wales’
- Poppy Kemp ‘Understanding the legitimisation of illegal acts of retaliation against institutions: exploring contextual factors and individual characteristics’
- Kat Osborne- The impact of practitioner’s gendered figurations of Muslim women on the policing of Prevent
Facilitating collaborative discussions across the department between students and academics, the conference encompassed the blossoming postgraduate research culture within the department. The conference was also delighted to welcome Dr Emily Glorney, Professor Darrick Joliffe, Rafi Hamidi, Professor Konstantinos Alexandris Polomarkakis together with Professor Marshall, in a panel roundtable on PGR journeys, research methods and research impact. Professor Joliffe and Dr Leonardo Oliveira chaired the PGR sessions, following welcome speeches from Dr Glorney, the School of Law and Social Sciences director of PGR, and Professor Marshall as lead for the department.
