Regulating International Surrogacy: "The Elephant in the Room"

International Surrogacy, Border Controls and the "Disconnected Family"

Dr Rita D'Alton-Harrison, Senior Lecturer in the School of Law will be publishing research on surrogacy in the Child and Family Court quarterly in March 2019.

Rita is a qualified solicitor and completed her PhD thesis whilst working as a senior lecturer at Royal Holloway. The thesis titled 'International Surrogacy, Border Controls and the 'Disconnected Family' (viva passed January 2018) comprised empirical research using court case files as units of data analysis to examine how UK commissioning couples report their experiences of international surrogacy to the courts when applying for a parental order. The Law Commission is currently conducting a three year review of the law on surrogacy as part of their 13th programme of reform.
