James Reynolds, a third year LLB Law with Criminology student has been awarded a scholarship at the Barristers’ Inn of Court at the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. To achieve this prestigious scholarship, James was involved in a rigorous interview process carried out over several months to prove his eligibility on criteria such as intellectual ability, motivation, interpersonal skills and advocacy potential. Having achieved this scholarship James was also awarded a Duke of Edinburgh Entrance Scholarship, which covers additional fees. Only around 70 scholarships and 50 awards were available this year.
Speaking about the award James said: "I am eternally grateful to the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and the Royal Family for generously awarding me two prestigious scholarships to train for the Bar. It was the empowerment that came from Royal Holloway's Law School that helped me to receive these honours. I would therefore like to thank the College and the staff in the department for their belief in me".
Professor Matthew Humphrey, Head of the School of Law and Social Sciences, added: “I would like to congratulate James on his achievement, it is testament to his hard work and determination, and we look forward to seeing where his journey takes him in future. Our department and the range of courses we offer to students has grown considerably since we first offered the LLB in 2014. The success of our students, like James, demonstrates the dedication and calibre of both our students, and the academic staff who support them".
Since expanding our offering in 2014 to include qualifying LLB Law degrees, our Department of Law and Criminology has gone from strength to strength. From an initial LLB Law cohort of just 60 students, for 2020/21 the LLB Law related courses attracted an intake of just over 300 students. The department overall has around 1,000 LLB Law students and this summer will see nearly 120 students successfully complete their course, including James.
The nature of Royal Holloway’s LLB Law related courses enable you to pursue a number of areas after graduation. While some graduates from the department have joined law firms, others have taken up roles at the Crown Prosecution Service, the police, the probation service, the prison service and the National Crime Agency, amongst others.
The department of Law and Criminology is joint 1st in the UK for Graduate Prospects (Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2021) and to support students for the world of work, we offer a range of extra-curricular activities and provide professional skills training, including mooting and client interviewing – in which students have found great success competing with students from other universities.
Developments in the department have included the establishment of the MSc Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Studies degree, the student-led Magna Carta Gazette and the Legal Advice Centre, where students provide free legal advice to the local community, under the supervision of qualified legal professionals.
