Chloe Sanyu, a third-year undergraduate student in the Department of Politics and International Relations, has completed during the summer a research project on the HE Freedom of Speech Bill (2021). The project was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Jenny Korkodeilou, Lecturer in Criminology at the Department of Law and Criminology.

In a four-week research project under the supervision of  Dr. Jenny Korkodeilou, Lecturer in Criminology, Chloe Sanyu looked at and researched a highly pertinent and timely topic, the recently introduced Higher Education Freedom of Speech Bill (2021) and its potential socio-political and educational implications in UK academia.

Her report focused on the potential benefits and disadvantages of the this new statutory tort and critically touched on key debates and issues such as community building, cancel culture, censorship, issues of harassment and bullying, safe spaces, freedoms, freedom of opinion and speech). Chloe used a wide range of secondary data to research the topic and carried out a literature review-based analysis focusing on academic articles, newspaper articles, reports from various organisations such as thinktanks and unions.

Chloe has successfully completed the project by producing a 4,000 word report based on this research project as part of the Summer Research and Education Programme within the College, which enabled students to undertake one-month summer placements working on projects designed by academic colleagues. The final version of the report is available here.
