The new Journal of Sound and Music in Games (JSMG) has published its first issue today, with input from the Department of Music at Royal Holloway.

The journal is the result of a partnership between the Society for the Study of Sound and Music in Games and the University of California Press. JSMG is a peer-reviewed publication that presents high-quality research concerning all areas of music and/or sound in games. Volume 1, Issue 1 is now available online, with all articles free to read.

Dr Tim Summers, Lecturer in Music at Royal Holloway, is Associate Editor of JSMG. Tim is a leading figure in Ludomusicology – the study of video game music – with publications including his monograph Understanding Video Game Music (Cambridge University Press, 2016), and recent chapters in the books Music in the Role-Playing Game: Heroes & Harmonies (Routledge, 2019) and Intermedia Games, Games Inter Media: Video Games and Intermediality (Bloomsbury Academic, 2019).

On the launch of the journal, Tim commented, 'I'm thrilled to be part of the editorial team of this new and exciting journal, alongside Professor Stephen Baysted (Editor in Chief, Chichester) and Elizabeth Medina-Gray (Associate Editor, Ithaca). This journal will be a meeting place for the hugely diverse field of research on game sound and music, as well as facilitating dialogue between the industry and academy.'

The first issue of JSMG also features a contribution from Dr Jonathan Godsall, Teaching Fellow in Music: a review of William Gibbons's book, Unlimited Replays: Video Games and Classical Music (Oxford University Press, 2018).
