Royal Holloway at Royal Musical Association's 150th Anniversary Conference

  • Date17 July 2024

The Department of Music will host a conference for the Royal Musical Association’s 150th anniversary from 11-13 September in London. This celebratory international conference will take place in Senate House, Royal Holloway’s Central London campus, and the British Library.

It will showcase the breadth and depth of contemporary musical research, from historical and contemporary musicology to composition, performance workshops to ethnomusicology: as has always been the RMA’s mission—unlike counterparts restricted to particular subdisciplines. Special panels will include publishers (on open access) and a roundtable of public figures (on music education). There will be two keynote addresses (from Professor Catherine A. Bradley, recipient of this year’s Dent Medal, and Alex Ross, music critic of The New Yorker). A closing reception at the British Library will be heralded by brass fanfares composed by the winner of a public competition.

Aiming to reflect on the RMA’s history and the Library’s musical holdings, to examine current challenges and opportunities for the discipline, and thereby to look to its future, the conference has been organised by a committee involving Dr Daniel Elphick and Dr Tim Summers and chaired by Professor Mark Berry. Speakers include Royal Holloway’s own Professor Stephen Rose, Professor Berry, Dr Elphick, and Dr Zubin Kanga, as well as numerous former colleagues and alumni.
