The CMS Trigger: Through the Ages

A trigger represents a fundamental component of hadron collider experiments. The ability to separate signal from background on extremely short time-scales represents a major technological and intellectual challenge. This seminar will seek to explain how the trigger system for the CMS Experiment at the LHC has evolved from the first run (2010 - 2012) through to its first major upgrade in 2016, where a significantly more advanced trigger was deployed.
The focus will be on discussing custom electronics, architecture choices, and ultimate performance. With preparations well underway for High Luminosity LHC, the challenges and status of the next major overhaul of the trigger system will be also be described.

Room : T125
