Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship success for Politics and International Relations

  • Date16 August 2018

Dr Licia Cianetti was awarded a three-year Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship starting September 2018 for the project “What happened to the multicultural city? Effects of nativism and austerity”.

The abstract for Dr Cianetti's project is as follows: "Cities are at the frontline of diversity politics, and city governments are expected (by academics and EU officials alike) to devise new ways of making diversity work. This pioneering role, however, is coming increasingly under strain as austerity and resurgent nativism have changed priorities and moods at European, national, and local levels. This research will compare how four European cities (Birmingham, Turin, Lisbon and Riga) are responding to this dual challenge, to understand what factors determine different responses, and – ultimately – what the future of European multicultural cities is likely to be. It uses a multimethod approach that combines process-tracing, discourse analysis, and collaborations with local artists."

A video-interview of Dr Cianetti's project is available below.
