Our research

EPMS Research

Research across the school is organised to break down traditional disciplinary boundaries to maximise contributions to fundamental science, address national and international priorities and make significant impact on the knowledge economy.

Our research is built on the diverse and combined strengths of individuals in our constituent Departments: Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Information Security, Mathematics, Physics and their Research Centres

Royal Holloway University of London has four focus areas that particularly drive interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange. The school is involved in all four and is leading on the following two.

  • Advanced Quantum Science and Technology
  • Transformative Digital Technologies, Security and Society

In the Quantum area of research expertise we are contributing to the second quantum revolution, driving new information processing and sensing capabilities. Our research spans quantum computing; novel superconducting quantum sensors; advanced quantum materials; metrology; quantum technology for fundamental physics discovery; post-quantum cryptography and quantum algorithms.

In the Digital area of research expertise we are addressing the opportunities emerging from the digital revolution, exploring the transformative impact of digital technologies on a rapidly changing world, supporting economic growth as well as social wellbeing and equality and tackling cybersecurity and societal risks.

EPMS is home to key infrastructure operating at national and international level. We highlight the UK Centre for Superconducting and Hybrid Quantum Systems (SuperFab), the London Low Temperature Laboratory, which is part of a European Advanced Infrastructure (European Microkelvin Platform), and the Materials Discovery Laboratory.
