McDowell Lecture 2024

The McDowell lecture is an annual public lecture and we welcome everyone and in particular schools, alumni and current students. It is given in honour of the late Professor Coulter McDowell (former Head of Mathematics at Royal Holloway) and this event celebrates Professor McDowell’s achievements and contributions not only to Royal Holloway but also to the wider field of Mathematics.

This year's lecture is on Thursday 14th November and will take place in the Windsor Auditorium.
Speaker: Sarah Hart (Birkbeck, University of London)
Title: A mathematical journey through literature
Abstract: This lecture will explore the many connections between mathematics and literature. I'll show you the hidden mathematical structures behind everything from poetry to novels, and reveal some of the beautiful mathematical imagery and symbolism in fiction, from simple fairytales to classics like Moby-Dick. My goal is to show that not only are mathematics and literature inextricably linked, but that understanding these links can enhance our enjoyment of both.
