Consisting of a large number of processes, policies, procedures and tools, our Environmental Management System (EMS) outlines our framework for protecting and, where possible, enhancing the natural environment.
We’re in the process of certifying our EMS to a well-recognised international standard ‘ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems’ and hope to achieve this during 2025.
The EMS scope, for the purpose of our ISO 14001 certification, covers: The provision of higher education and research, including all related support services and site management, at Royal Holloway, University of London.
This applies to all operations and infrastructure across any internal and external spaces over which the University has full operational control, specifically where it can choose and manage its own power, waste and water supplies. This involves the buildings and grounds that are both owned by, or on long-term rent to, Royal Holloway across its Egham and London campuses, but does not include any non-operational (unused) spaces, or spaces are on long-term rent by Royal Holloway to others.
Where possible, the principles captured in this EMS will also be applied to Royal Holloway’s other domestic and international travel and activities.
EMS Steering Group
A separate steering group, consisting of the relevant Heads of Service and other colleagues, has been established to manage the EMS framework and accreditation process and oversee the annual site, documentation and waste audits, as well as any necessary external audits.
The group is chaired by Mark Berry, Head of Sustainability, who will report into the Environmental Sustainability Working Group (ESWG) and also provide regular progress reports to the EMS Executive Sponsor – Stephen McAuliffe, Executive Director of Business and People Services. Full membership extends to:
- Mark Berry, Head of Sustainability (Chair)
- Anastasia Holley, Data Analyst (Deputy Chair)
- Angela Muswell, Head of Estates Services
- Amjid Baig, Head of Maintenance Services
- David Berry, Head of Residences Services
- Claire Mayers, Technical Operations Manager
