Ninette de Valois: a re-examination of her early career in British theatre, her formation and leadership of the Vic-Wells Ballet School and Company, between 1918-40
About
Ninette de Valois (1898 - 2001) was the founder of The Royal Ballet School and Companies. My thesis examines how her philosophical convictions and creative ambitions fundamentally shaped an ethos for ballet in England, 1925-1934. It draws upon archival and literary sources as well as practice-based research for which I re-created de Valois's earliest choreographic study, The Arts of the Theatre (1925), working with students of The Royal Ballet School in 2020/21.
