Tuning In: Sustainable Leadership Solutions for the Wellbeing and Mental Health Crisis in UK Television Production

About

Funded by the Department of Media Arts at Royal Holloway University of London, my PhD project is on the mental health and wellbeing crisis faced by creative workers in the UK television industry and sustainable leadership solutions that create a positive work environment leading to better creativity and increased profits. This study is born out of my own experiences and observations working in the television industry and my MBA dissertation on leading creative teams in UK television. Wellbeing issues such as bullying, harassment, systemic bias, long hours and low pay are relatively unregulated, providing an unsustainable working environment no other industry would tolerate. My study is intended to change that.

Data collection includes interviews with leaders in the television industry to understand the barriers they face in addressing wellbeing issues, the issues they face themselves and solutions that nurture talent, welcome authenticity and create a better product. These are fully anonymised to protect the participants' identities and that of any person or organisation mentioned. I am also co-producing a short film as a case study in producing with wellbeing at the centre of the production process. For more on my background and the project, please follow this link.
