Media arts from every perspective

As you might expect from such a well-rated Media Arts department, you’ll be taught by world-class scholars and industry professionals.

You’ll also enjoy a unique equal combination of critical theory and creative practice. Our wide range of courses and excellent facilities will provide you with a broad foundation for a career in the media and communications industries.

Wide range of flexible degrees

We offer a range of undergraduate degrees and an array of programmes and research topics for postgraduate students, all taught by media professionals who have held or are still holding high-ranking positions in the industry.  See:

Our postgraduate research students will join a vibrant, international community of around 30 PhD students who are working on both theoretical and practice-based topics.

Whether you’re an undergraduate or postgraduate student, you’ll have considerable freedom in your choice of courses during your degree and will be encouraged to develop as an individual, pursuing your intellectual passions and developing your creative potential.

Teaching by world-renowned academics and industry professionals

At Royal Holloway, you’ll be taught by academics with international reputations who are leading scholars in their specialist fields, and by current practitioners, many of whom maintain professional media careers as directors, producers and screenwriters.

We also provide a supporting and inspiring environment, with a friendly and welcoming ethos. Staff offer individual attention whenever required and we run a Personal Adviser system. This means you’ll be assigned a member of staff who’ll provide academic advice and support throughout your degree programme.

Relations between staff and students are enhanced by regular meetings of the department’s official staff-student committee.

State-of-the-art facilities

While studying at Royal Holloway, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities, such as a television studio and gallery equipped with industry level recording equipment. You’ll also learn how to follow the same protocol as used in professional practice.

Excellent employability prospects

We’re ranked highly for career prospects and our graduates are extremely employable - 92% of our graduates are employed or go on to further study within six months of graduating (DLHE 2017). In recent years, our graduates have entered many different media-related fields including terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, film and television production and information technology and design.

Others have found success as music video directors, Hollywood script supervisors, independent documentary film-makers, web designers and contemporary artists.

You can also enhance your employability by taking part in our competitive work placement scheme, open to all undergraduates in the department as they progress through their degree.
