Applicants to Royal Holloway come from a diverse range of backgrounds and we accept a broad range of qualifications to our courses. Each applicant is considered carefully on their individual merits, but please see below for the standard minimum entry requirements for international students currently studying in the UK.
Undergraduate
A Levels & International Baccalaureate (IB)
If you have taken A levels or the IB, you will be considered for direct entry onto our undergraduate programmes. Specific grade requirements can be found in the course finder entry for your chosen course.
Foundation Programmes
Royal Holloway considers applications from students taking foundation year programmes for direct entry into our undergraduate programmes. The exact requirement will depend on the programme you wish to study, but will likely ask for 65-70% overall plus any subject specific requirements. English language requirements must also be met.
Royal Holloway offers progression degrees for students on the relevant foundation pathways at the Royal Holloway International Study Centre.
All other foundation programmes are considered on a case by case basis. We consider students taking foundation programmes at providers including OnCampus, CATS, Bellerbys, INTO, Kings, David Game College, Kaplan, Bell Cambridge, Abbey College and DLD College.
The Royal Holloway International Study Centre
The Royal Holloway International Study Centre provides an International Foundation Year and International Year One programme, which are designed for international students who do not quite meet the requirements for an undergraduate course. These programmes will help to develop your academic and English language skills in preparation for university. Upon successful completion, you can progress to degree level study at Royal Holloway, University of London.
How to apply
Undergraduate students applications are made online via UCAS. But if you are applying to a University preparation course, then apply to Royal Holloway directly. There is more application information in the Studying Here section of the Royal Holloway website.
Postgraduate
Students who have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate subject with good grades at a UK university will be considered for direct entry to a Royal Holloway Master's degree programme. Exact requirements will depend upon the programme but most departments will ask for either a Lower Second Class Honours (2:2) or an Upper Second Class Honours (2:1).
Pre-Masters Degree
Royal Holloway considers Pre-Masters Degrees and Masters Foundation Programmes from UK institutions for entry to many of our postgraduate degree programmes. We usually require that students have completed a bachelors degree prior to studying a Pre-Masters degree, but students who have high grades in a diploma or equivalent will be considered on a case by case basis.
English language requirements
To apply to any of our courses, you need to prove a minimum level of English language proficiency.
Undergraduate
We accept English Language GCSE, essay-based A-Levels, International Baccalaureate Diploma or IELTS to meet our requirements. Please see each programme page for specific requirements.
Postgraduate
If you have studied two years or more of your degree in the UK, you are not required to take any further English language tests.
If you are completing a top up year at a UK university, we will remove the English Language requirement if you have achieved either:
IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each subscore to enter your top-up degree
or
IELTS 5.5 overall to enter the top-up degree and successfully completed a pre-sessional English language programme at the top-up university.
Fees and scholarships

You could be eligible for one of our undergraduate or postgraduate scholarships.
If you are considering postgraduate study at Royal Holloway, there may be external funding available to you.

Over the 130-year history of the university, we have created an environment where a close-knit community thrives.
Just 40 minutes by train from London and seven miles from Heathrow, our campus is one of the most beautiful in the world with numerous teaching and study spaces, bars and cafés, high-quality accommodation, and sports facilities. All this is set in 135 acres of stunning parkland.
