How to Write a Compelling Nonfiction Book Proposal

You are invited to join a one-day workshop that will help you to develop a pitch and proposal for a non-fiction book inspired by your PhD research. The day will cover publisher expectations, how to structure a proposal, and how to distinguish your book from competitor works. It will also highlight the common mistakes that can prevent a proposal’s potential being recognised.

You will learn how to identify and exploit the unique strengths of your idea and to make best use of your personal background and track record. This session will also outline the simple rules that can be used to maximise your chances of publication. Each student will also have the opportunity to share an abstract of their book proposal to receive feedback on the day.

This workshop is best suited to Techne students who are nearing the end of their PhD studies and are interested in pursuing the possibility of writing a non-fiction book for either an academic or trade publisher. Participants wishing to pitch an academic book or nonfiction book for a lay audience are both welcome.

Overview of the day:
10.30am -11am: Arrival (with Refreshments)
11am -1pm: Presentation by Richard Toye on the key principles of devising a successful book proposal and how to devise a clear pitch to maximise the chances of getting a publisher’s attention.
1pm – 1.45pm: Lunch
1.45pm-4pm: Workshop with Richard Toye and Claire Lynch. In two groups, participants will share their proposals for peer feedback, group discussion and feedback from Richard or Claire. Participants will receive advice on refining and developing their pitches.
