Techne January Congress 2024: Breaking the Cycle
EDI is now a mandatory consideration within universities and it has given rise to numerous initiatives, reports and policies. But what do the terms ‘Equality’, ‘Diversity’ and ‘Inclusivity’ actually mean to us, and what is the relationship between these three entities? ‘EDI’ works well as a memorable acronym, but it is also a nebulous term, behind which a number of important issues lurk. Is ‘EDI’ as a unified notion really fit-for-purpose and can it speak to intersectional experience? Despite the work done, oppressive practices and systems of injustice still persist. How can we break the cycle?
This Congress will explore these questions, how these issues play out within academia, and how they can inform our research. The conference will feature panels, lectures and workshops on a variety of topics relating to equality, diversity and inclusion, including:
- Keynote lectures from Dr Melissa Jogie (University of Roehampton) and Dr Ailsa Grant-Ferguson (University of Brighton).
- Podcasting as inclusive publishing
- PhDs and Parenting
- Politics of Representation
- Presentations from Techne students
- Career development support
- And many more!
The main part of the day will be taking place at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, whilst from 5pm we will be moving over to 'The Apartment' within The Hoxton, Holborn.
Please book in by the deadline of 5pm on Monday 18 December 2023.

We do understand that occasionally circumstances mean this is not possible, so if you aren't able to attend, please email us to let us know.
Attendance (including catering) is free for Techne students , and you will be able to reclaim your travel expenses*. Techne alumni and non-Techne students are welcome to attend, but can't reclaim travel expenses.
Evening Event:
In addition to the main portion of the Congress during the day, we are excited to announce that we have secured the use of 'The Apartment' at the nearby Hoxton, Holborn from 5-8:30pm to host an evening event. This will be your chance to share your research with your fellow students and Techne partners and make connections in a more relaxed environment. We would be grateful if you could indicate when booking your attendance to the Congress whether you can attend the latter part of the day so we can make the relevant catering arrangements with the venue.
